The phosphate deposits are naturally rich in cadmium, and potentially other metals, which may be threatening the Christmas Island flying-fox population. WebUnion of Christmas Island Workers recommenced phosphate mining in 1990. Over time, shares were sold and now the mine is operated by Phosphate Resources Limited (PRL), trading as Christmas Island Phosphates. PRL and its parent company have diversified into maintenance, fuel and marine services on Christmas Island and palm oil in Malaysia.
